Wounds of Colour / Run Run Stop No
Nikos Ziarkas
London-based guitarist and composer Nikos Ziarkas, an unsung cornerstone of the UK jazz scene, is known for his distinctive sound, technical mastery, and ability to traverse genres with ease and grace. Known for his work with the experimental jazz ensemble Valia Calda, Ziarkas has collaborated with an impressive roster of artists, including Theon Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Steam Down, Ron Trent, and Moses Boyd. This November 2024, Ziarkas unveils his debut release under his own name—a double single—via the independent label Deep Mountain Records. The project, born during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, was entirely composed, recorded, and produced by Ziarkas in his Haringey studio in North London. Each single explores the limitless possibilities of the guitar, blending jazz-rock, experimental textures, and captivating synth layers. Together, they mark a significant turning point in Ziarkas' artistic journey, showcasing his creative exploration during a transformative period. The first single, Wounds of Colour, is a meditative piece that fuses processed guitar, analog synthesizers, loops, and samples. Featuring Greek trumpet virtuoso Andreas Polyzopoulos, the track carries a poignant emotional depth as Polyzopoulos' evocative trumpet melodies weave through the intricate soundscape. The piece reflects on the power of understanding one’s past and how it can shape and inspire the present. In contrast, Run Run Stop No is a high-energy fusion of jazz and rock, built around a compelling guitar riff and infectious rhythms. Drawing inspiration from icons like Nels Cline and Soundgarden, the track propels listeners forward with its electrifying intensity. It also features UK jazz rising star, saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael, whose dynamic performance adds a thrilling dimension to this genre-defying anthem. With this release, Nikos Ziarkas embarks on a new chapter in his career—one that offers even greater freedom to explore and express his artistic vision.
